Lately the economy has been hitting everyone pretty hard. And
unfortunately Times Square is bidding Virgin Megastore goodbye. The
store will be closing sometime between now and April 2009. The building
is basically cleaned out as CDs and DVDs lye on the floor from the
stampedes of people flipping through them. Currently Virgin pays around
$100 per square foot, but future "retailers are expected to pay as much
as $750 to $1,000 a square foot." The rent has become too expensive and
it is not confirmed if another store in New York will open or one in
San Francisco to replace that closing location as well. The music store
in Times Square instead will be replaced by a Forever 21.
Personally as a Tokio Hotel fan I am sad to see the New York location
go. I know that along with many other fans many good memories were held
in that store. Virgin Megastore in New York held the first Tokio Hotel
signing in the United States on May 6,2008 to celebrate the Scream
albums release. Coincidentally MTV TRL also closed their doors after
hosting TH in May and then August. Conan O'Brien also has been canceled
along with Steven's Untitled Rock Show. With the economy so bad many
entertainment shows are having to be canceled leaving fans wondering
what shows Tokio Hotel will have to go on when they return in the
upcoming Summer of 2009? All MTV Live shows have been canceled leaving
slim pickings for the boys to appear on and promote their new album.
Tokio Hotel's future is uncertain in the failing American economy but
hopefully with Obama as president and new song writers backing the boys
perhaps this German band will go far.
The store is entirely sold out of Tokio Hotel T-shirts and there are only three CDs left for sale.
